1. DraftKings

DraftKings-App.jpg

DraftKings is one of the best sportsbooks in America, no matter what state you are playing from. That is because the service has some of the most consistent odds out of every sports betting site in Louisiana. That means placing bets at DraftKings is usually the best way to maximize your returns, should your wagers come true.

For those of you who are looking for a bit of background, DraftKings began as a fantasy sports provider. From here, it branched into sports betting in 2018 when the Supreme Court overturned the 1992 PASPA. Now, DraftKings operates a sportsbook, fantasy sports service, as well as an online casino in select states and an NFT Marketplace. If you are serious about sports betting and want to get the most out of your time with one platform, DraftKings is the best option in Louisiana.

2. FanDuel

FanDuel-App.jpg

There are many similarities between FanDuel and DraftKings. They both started as fantasy sports providers and now offer a sports betting platform across the United States. FanDuel has around 20 sports for Louisiana residents to bet on, including sports like tennis, snooker, and lacrosse. Plus, FanDuel has an excellent live betting service. This is where you can follow a game using the fancy animated graphic or watch some events using the live stream.

Both services also offer players the chance to win large cash prizes for free by entering certain competitions. Also, both sportsbooks have increased the range of promotions available to all players over the past few months. If you are looking for the best sports betting experience, FanDuel or DraftKings are excellent options.

3. Caesars

Caesars-App.jpg

Caesars offers a unique experience from the other two sports betting platforms we have mentioned. That is because Caesars offers an excellent reward system. Loyal players can earn reward points by making sports bets or visiting a casino and playing exciting slots or table games. You can then choose a reward once you have collected enough points. There are dozens of prizes, including free hotel stays and discounted holidays being the most valuable.

Focusing on the sportsbook, Caesars is one of the largest in LA, with around 23 sports to bet on. Caesars is a superb choice for motorsport fans as you can bet on Formula 1, IndyCar, and the entire NASCAR series. The sportsbook is also fantastic for offering fans boosted bets. This includes quick picks for the EPL, NBA, and NHL games, plus multi-sport parlays with boosted returns. If you are serious about sports betting, Caesars also offers players a consistent stream of profit boosts to use on any market.

4. BetMGM

BetMGM-App.jpg

With 20 sports on offer, BetMGM is another well-equipped sportsbook. The events on offer include all the names you might expect, such as the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB. Plus, there is an impressive collection of obscure sports, like handball, darts, and cricket. What makes BetMGM a standout choice is the range of promotions. You can enter competitions to win free bets or large cash prizes, plus you can claim a free bet for the MLB.

BetMGM is an outstanding sportsbook for players looking to place live bets. That is because they offer live streams for various sports and a fancy graphic that updates in real time. You will also find a wide assortment of stats on the current match and details about each team’s previous performances. Overall, BetMGM is a brilliant online sportsbook with a reward system similar to Caesars.

5. BetRivers

BetRivers-App.jpg

The BetRivers sportsbook is another great choice for residents of Louisiana. Like the services we have mentioned above, BetRivers has around 22 events for us to bet on. That includes a variety of different sports, like bowling, volleyball, and popular events such as golf. The sportsbook is one of the best equipped in LA, as it offers a humongous collection of leagues from all over the globe. Looking at soccer, there are over 40 leagues and tournaments from Armenia to Switzerland.

Another one of BetRivers’ biggest strengths is live betting. Just like the sportsbooks we have already mentioned, you can watch sports live or you can follow along with the animated graphic. Plus, BetRivers is the best site for providing insightful statistics about sporting events. You can also find out the betting trends for the game and use the Genius Predictor to create a random bet just for you. If you want to get stuck in sports betting and want as much information as possible to help you bet, BetRivers is the way to go.

6. WynnBET

WynnBET-App.jpg

WynnBET is now available in ten states, making it another popular choice with bettors. The sportsbook differs from the ones mentioned above, as it is far simpler. There are only ten sports available, including NASCAR and Formula 1. The other eight markets are the most popular for Americans to bet on, such as baseball, basketball, football, golf, and hockey, plus events like MMA.

What makes WynnBET a great sportsbook is the range of promotions available. Every week, players can claim free bets in several ways. That includes betting on certain sports, making specific wagers, or just betting on allotted days. Plus, the reward system allows players to claim free bets once they have amassed enough reward points. WynnBET might be small, but it is one of the best for promos.

7. Barstool

Barstool-App.jpg

If you have heard of Barstool, they create sports-based content with some rather unique personalities. While this might not be for everyone, the sportsbook does a great job of accommodating both new and experienced players. There is a good range of sports available and they have increased the number of promotions on offer. Barstool had bonus bets for the Masters, March Madness, and various other important sporting events.

There are a lot of strengths to the service at Barstool. The first is how easy the sportsbook is to use on your mobile device. They incorporate sliders for you to adjust the size of a total bet or point spread. Plus, the sportsbook features boosted bets created by the personalities we mentioned. These wagers can offer great returns or a little inspiration to create a wager of your own.

8. PointsBet

PointsBet-App.jpg

PointsBet is now available in 14 states, making it one of the most widely available services in America. Its popularity stems from several features, including a unique wager you won’t find at rival sportsbooks. PointsBetting is when you bet on aspects such as the total number of points scored in a game. For every point scored above your prediction, the sportsbook will payout more. However, getting this wrong will end up costing you more than your stake.

There are around 14 events to bet on at PointsBet, considerably fewer than the best sports betting sites in LA. There is a reward system for players to claim free bets, but that is usually the only way to claim bonuses in this sportsbook. They do not give out promotions regularly at this sports betting site. However, if you are a fan of parlays, you can use the Quick Parlay bet builder. This is where you can choose your sports, and the wagers you want to include, then easily create a multi-sport parlay.

9. Betfred - Coming Soon

Betfred-App.jpg

Currently, Betfred does not offer an online sports betting service to residents of Louisiana. However, there is a retail sportsbook within state lines. The Paragon Casino Resort has a Betfred Sportsbook inside the casino for patrons to visit and make sports bets in person. The sportsbook inside the Paragon Casino was the first service to accept a sports bet in the Pelican State. Plus, Betfred is planning on launching a mobile sports betting app in Louisiana later this year.

10. Betway - Coming Soon

Betway-App.jpg

Betway is unavailable in Louisiana, but that could change later this year. Betway announced in 2022 that it was planning a Louisiana launch in early 2023, but that has yet to materialize. There is still a good chance Betway will launch an online sportsbook later this year, but there has been no official word from the company. If anything changes, we will ensure you know.

11. ClutchBet - Coming Soon

ClutchBet-App.jpg

ClutchBet is now available in Iowa and Colorado and the sportsbook plans to launch in Louisiana and Indiana later this year. There is no word of an official launch date in either state, but we are sure it will be later in 2023. Once again, if there are any updates, we will amend this guide. Make sure you check back here in a couple of months for any changes.

12. FOX Bet - Coming Soon

FOX-Bet-App.jpg

You can only join FOX Bet from four states in America, Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. There are rumors that FOX Bet plans to launch in Louisiana, but there has been no official confirmation. It is always difficult to verify whether a sportsbook will open in a state and that is certainly the case for FOX Bet. The silence could mean they are gearing up for a launch, or they have no intention of doing so. Only time will tell if FOX Bet comes to Louisiana.

13. TwinSpires - Retail Only

TwinSpires-App.jpg

TwinSpires only offers an online sports betting experience in Arizona after the service shut down on May 16, 2022. However, there are several TwinSpires retail locations spread across America, including one in Louisiana. You can place a sports bet with TwinSpires by visiting the retail sportsbook at the Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans.

14. Bally Bet - Retail Only

Bally-Bet-App.jpg

Bally Bet is another sports betting platform only available in person. Bally's Shreveport Casino & Hotel is the only location in Louisiana where residents can access the Bally Bet Sportsbook. The company has not announced any intention of expanding the service to our mobile devices. It is safe to assume you will not see the Bally Bet mobile app available in LA in 2023.

The History of Sports Betting in Louisiana

Legal sports betting has only been available in Louisiana since October 2021. However, states legalized sportsbooks as early as 2018 after the Supreme Court overruled the 1992 PASPA. Before 2018, sports betting was mostly illegal across the United States. Now, Louisiana is one of over 30 states with infrastructure in place to accept legal sports bets.

Although there are so many states with legal sportsbooks, each one had a unique journey to getting the legislation in place. Below is a timeline of important events in Louisiana toward getting sports betting legalized. Plus, you will also find details about when each service first started operating in the Pelican State.

  • February 1991: Sen. DeConcini introduces the PASPA to the Senate.
  • June 1992: After over a year, the Senate passes the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act with 88 votes for and five against.
  • October 1992: President Bush signs the PASPA into law. This means sports betting across America is now illegal except for a select few places.
  • June 2017: The Supreme Court will now entertain oral arguments against the PASPA after years of failed campaigns across the United States
  • May 2018: The Supreme Court rules against the PASPA, they deemed it unconstitutional. The act is no longer in effect and each state can legalize sports betting if they wish.
  • November 2020: Out of the 64 parishes in Louisiana, 55 voted in favor of legalizing sports betting.
  • June 2021: They sign three laws into place to legalize sports betting. That includes details about the tax system plus the launch dates for sportsbooks in the state. Retail sports betting will launch later in 2021, with online sports betting coming in 2022.
  • October 6, 2021: The first retail sports betting location opens in Louisiana, the Betfred Sportsbook at the Paragon Casino is the first venue to take sports bets.
  • January 28, 2022: A few months after the release of retail sports betting, residents of LA can now make sports bets online.
  • January 28, 2022: DraftKings launches in Louisiana and announces plans to launch another retail sportsbook in the state.
  • January 28, 2022: FanDuel also starts taking sports bets on the opening day.
  • January 28, 2022: Caesars Sportsbook was the third sportsbook in Louisiana to launch on the first day.
  • January 28, 2022: BetMGM joins the party by also launching an online sportsbook in LA.
  • January 28, 2022: The fifth online sportsbook to take sports bets in Louisiana was BetRivers.
  • January 28, 2022: Barstool was the sixth operator to take sports bets in the state.
  •  February 10, 2022: A few weeks after online sports betting became legal in the Pelican State, WynnBET establishes its online sportsbook.
  • September 23, 2022: PointsBet is the latest online sportsbook to operate in Louisiana.
  • May 2023: Eight sportsbooks are available in LA with up to four more entering the state later this year. The other sports betting platforms include Betway, Betfred, ClutchBet, and FOX Bet.

Who can Legally Bet on Sports in Louisiana?

Each state can legalize and regulate sports betting, resulting in stark differences between them. Some states allow players as young as 18 to sign up, others require players to be within a retail sportsbook to place a valid bet. The list below has the relevant information for residents of Louisiana.

  • Legal Age: To make a legal sports bet in Louisiana, you must be 21 years of age or older. Players under the legal age requirement are not allowed to place a sports bet in LA either online or in person.
  • Mobile Betting: Most legal sportsbooks in Louisiana support mobile sports bets, except for three. Neither TwinSpires, Betfred nor Bally Bet support online wagers at the moment. However, you can place sports bets using your mobile device if you sign up for one of eight licensed services operating in LA.
  • State Lines: If you want to make a sports bet in Louisiana, you must be within state lines. No sports betting service will accept your wager if you are outside the state, as each sportsbook has geolocation software built in.
  • Remote Registration: You do not need to visit a retail sportsbook to register for betting. You can join any online service we have listed above using a mobile device and you can register anywhere in Louisiana.
  • Retail Locations: There are several retail sportsbooks for residents to visit in Louisiana. Some of these services are also available online for players to bet remotely. Others are only available in person, usually within casinos.

Online Sports Betting Markets LA

The table below is here to show you what sports are on offer at each sportsbook. You might not realize that sports betting sites could vary so much with the sports on offer until you have signed up. This table will show you which sportsbooks have the markets you want to bet on without having to sign up and find out for yourself.

Sports appear or disappear from the sportsbook regularly. That is because some sportsbooks do not follow every tour, league, and tournament. That means when the popular event is over, there might not be any more wagers to place. This table will give you an idea of which sportsbooks are the best equipped, but this can change over the year. Therefore, it might be worthwhile considering other factors, such as promotions, before you sign up.

What can’t you Bet on in Louisiana?

No matter what state you are in, there are restrictions in place over what events you can bet on. Some states are very strict with these rules. Meaning players cannot bet on college-level sports or annual award ceremonies like the Oscars. However, these rules are not the same for every state, meaning there can be a lot of confusion. Below are the events residents of Louisiana cannot bet on.

  • Politics
  • Award Ceremonies
  • High School Events
  • eSports

There is a lot of confusion around what is legal in Louisiana with several websites claiming eSports betting is legal. That is not the case. The reason for eSports being off the table has to do with the age of the players. Residents of LA cannot bet on players younger than 18 years of age no matter what sport they partake in. That means high school events are not allowed and most eSports competitions have players under the age of 18.

Types of Bets at Louisiana Online Sportsbooks

Now that you know what is currently off the table in LA, we can examine the bets you can place. Every sportsbook in Louisiana has a wide range of wagers for you to consider. This includes simple bets, such as point spreads, as well as complex wagers, such as the same game parlay. If you are looking for more information about a certain type of wager, be sure to check out the betting guides we have at Bet Station.

  • Point Spread
  • Moneyline
  • Over/Under
  • Parlay
  • Live Bets
  • Same Game Parlays
  • Futures
  • Teasers
  • Proposition Bet
  • Round Robin

If you are looking for a quick summary, there are a few rules of thumb to remember. The more complex a wager is, the higher the returns can be. If you look at a parlay, you add complexity by increasing the number of legs on the bet slip. For the parlay to win, every leg must come true. The more legs you add, the less likely the bet will come true, and your possible returns increase. Parlays are a great way to turn a small amount of cash into a lot of money, but they require you to make several accurate predictions to win.

Tax Rates for Online Gambling Louisiana

No matter what state you live in, your gambling winnings are taxable. That is because, in the eyes of the law, gambling is a source of income, just like your annual salary. When filing your taxes, you must declare gambling winnings as income, which is then combined with your salary and then you pay tax. The amount you pay in tax depends on the state’s tax system plus how much you earn in a fiscal year.

Louisiana has a graduated tax system where residents pay more in taxes depending on how much they earn. There are three tax bands in the state ranging from 1.85% up to 4.25%. However, this is not the only tax consideration you will have to make. As well as state taxes, residents will have to contribute towards social security and pay federal taxes. Once again, these rates will depend on your annual income. To get a rough estimation of how much tax you will pay, use an online Louisiana income tax calculator.

Louisiana Online Sports Betting Revenue

Sports betting has been legal in Louisiana for over a year, giving us a lot of data to examine. The state has both online and retail locations which submit their monthly numbers to the Louisiana Gaming Control Board for us all to see. Instead of looking at the numbers from 2022, we want to know how it’s going right now. The table below has the most recent activity in LA for online and retail sports betting.

December 2022January 2023February 2023Total
Retail$35.5M$37M$21.9M$94.5M
Mobile$218.7M$245.2M$175.7M$639.6M
Total$254.2M$282.2M$197.7M$734.2M

The table above has the total handle of sports betting platforms in Louisana over three months. If you are wondering what we mean by the handle, think of it as the total amount residents wagered on a sportsbook. Looking at the numbers, there is a clear divide between retail and mobile betting activity which is common across the United States. Interestingly, sports betting was worth over $730 million in just three months, including retail and online sports wagers. It’s difficult to compare the betting activity between states. However, this activity shows that sports betting is incredibly popular in LA.

Payment Methods at LA Sportsbooks

One of the most overlooked aspects to consider when signing up for an online sportsbook is the payment method. Not a lot of players consider the ways they can withdraw or deposit funds before signing up. We recommend all players, no matter how experienced, check the payment methods before registering at a sportsbook.

The reason for this extra research is the inconvenience support agents can be. Some players have reported waiting weeks or even months to receive their winnings, all because they did not check the options before signing up. It is easy to assume every sportsbook will make it as easy as possible to deposit or withdraw, but that’s not always the case. That’s why we created the following tables to show you the methods available at each LA sports betting site.

Deposits

No matter what payment method you use, most transactions will appear in your account within a matter of minutes. However, in our experience, methods such as PayPal are the quickest and easiest ways to get money into your digital account. If you are looking to make a wager using cash, you can either visit a retail sportsbook or look for a service that supports PayNearMe. You can find PayNearMe machines in convenience stores across Louisiana.

You do not need to choose the service with the most options. Simply look for the options that are the easiest for you to use. While you can create a Play+ account just for online sports betting, it is usually easier to use a payment system you have already set up. Whatever method you choose, don’t forget to check out the responsible gambling tools.

Withdrawals

A lot of what we have already discussed also applies to withdrawal methods. However, there are a few differences you should note. For starters, there are always fewer ways to withdraw your winnings when compared to depositing your funds. Don’t assume that a site will have easy ways to withdraw what’s yours just because they make it easy to deposit. Plus, withdrawals take longer to process than deposits. We won’t go into exactly why, but the quickest withdrawal methods are e-wallets such as PayPal.

One aspect we feel obliged to mention is security. Most sports betting sites have security measures in place to protect your funds. This means players might not be eligible for a PayPal withdrawal until they have used this method to make a deposit. This may sound frustrating, but it would stop someone from gaining access to your account and withdrawing directly to their PayPal. If you have any issues, contact the sportsbook’s support team.

Promotions and Bonuses at Louisiana Betting Websites

We have mentioned various promotions throughout this guide, but that does not make it easy for new players to spot a good deal. We recommend all players read the fine print before claiming a bonus, no matter what it is, but there is more advice to give. Below we have details about all the promotions you will find at sports betting sites in Louisiana. Use this information to find out what type of promos suit you.

Best Sites for Free Bets

Free bets are our favorite type of promotion, as they allow us freedom and a fantastic opportunity. Usually, betting on a sportsbook comes at a price, the price being your cash. However, a free bet is your chance to win actual money without using your funds. You are probably trying to figure out what the catch is, but the only downside is you can’t keep the value of a free bet.

If you were going to bet $10 on the Yankees to beat the Twins at +100, you would expect to see $20 if the bet came true. That is because your bet would win $10 and you would get your stake back, which was also ten dollars. If you had a free bet worth ten dollars, you would only get the $10 in winnings, but it would be yours to keep. Below are the best sites for free bets in Louisiana.

  • BetMGM: Make a $25 prop bet for any MLB player to hit a home run on Wednesday and get a $10 free bet to use on any market.
  • BetRivers: Place three MLB same game parlays in a week for a $10 free bet. If you make a live bet during the NBA playoffs, get it matched up to $25 in free bets. Bet on the Madrid Open tennis tournament and get up to a $50 free bet.
  • WynnBET: Win, lose, or push live bets on the weekend for $10 in free bets. Plus, the same promotion applies to multi-sport parlays Monday to Wednesday. You can also get a $50 free bet if your $25 three-leg build-a-bet NBA parlay comes true. New players can get $100 in free bets when they sign up and place a $100 wager.

Best Sites for Risk-Free Bets

A risk-free bet is a common type of welcome bonus in West Virginia. It’s when a sportsbook will cover your first bet, up to a certain point, if the wager loses. The promotion will have no effect if your first bet wins, and you get to enjoy all the winnings. But, if you lose, the sportsbook will refund you with free bets to match your original wager. Some sports betting sites will give you one free bet, others will split it up into several lower values.

You can then use these free bets to win actual cash from the sportsbook. This is usually unrestricted, meaning you can make parlays, straight bets, or anything else that catches the eye. Plus, you can bet on any sport and league available on the platform. Some of these welcome offers are worth upwards of $1,000. You do not need to make a humongous wager when you first join, only bet on what you are comfortable losing. Whether you bet $20 or $200, the sportsbook will cover this amount if you fail your first wager.

  • Caesars: Sign up to Caesars for a risk-free bet worth up to $1,250 and 1,000 tier credits plus 1,000 reward credits.
  • BetMGM: New players can enjoy a risk-free bet worth $1,000 when they register at BetMGM.
  • Barstool: Any new player can claim a risk-free bet worth $1,000 to use on any sport at Barstool.

Best Sites for Odds Boosts

When we talk about odds boosts, it is easy to get them confused with profit boosts. Odds boosts are when the sportsbook increases the odds of a particular wager, thereby increasing the potential returns. Profit boosts are similar, but you have free will over which wagers to increase. Sports betting sites can give you profit boosts for straight bets, parlays, and even the same game parlays.

The benefit of both these promotions is that you get more bang for your buck. The profit boost is a fan favorite because it gives players more control over what gets boosted. We always recommend checking for boosted bets, in case there is an opportunity to bet on something with better returns.

  • DraftKings: Build an MLB same game parlay and receive a profit boost of up to 100%. You can also claim a 33% same game parlay boost on all sports and a 25% profit boost on the NHL. Players interested in the NBA can get a 33% profit boost on any live same game parlay.
  • Caesars: All players can claim one 33% profit boost every day to use on the NBA, MLB, or NHL.

How to Get Started at Louisiana Sportsbooks

WynnBET-LA.PNG

Signing up for an online sportsbook is not as straightforward as you might think. Some sports betting sites have an optional promo code box, which is quite important. That is because sometimes a welcome bonus requires new players to paste in a specific code to receive the promotion. Failing to enter a code while registering for the sportsbook may cause you to miss out on a welcome bonus. Follow the steps below to ensure you do not lose out.

  • Step 1: The first step is to download a sportsbook to your mobile device or visit the website. Then you must check the current welcome offer and read the terms and conditions. You must read all the fine print for promos as there are many rules which can cause you to forgo your bonus. It is at this point you should also check if the bonus to help you get started requires a code while signing up. If there is no mention of a promo code, you can progress.
  • Step 2: The next step is to start the registration process. This is where you will enter an email address, choose a password, and create a username in some circumstances. You might also see a promo code box which is marked by the word optional. If the sportsbook you join requires a code for the welcome bonus, make sure you enter it now. Plus, if you have a buddy who has already registered, you can paste a friend referral code here for you both to receive a bonus.
  • Step 3: After this, the next stage requires personal information. This includes details about you, such as your gender, address, date of birth, and cell phone number. It’s also at this point that the sports betting platform will ask for the last four digits of your Social Security Number. They use your SSN for verification, to ensure you are eligible to gamble. Some sports betting sites can allow players to use other forms of identification at this stage.
  • Step 4: The last step before you have full access to the sportsbook is to verify your account. We can achieve this by clicking through an email link or entering a code sent to your cell phone. Once verified, you can now make a cash deposit at the sportsbook. Make sure you read the fine print one more time to ensure you do not void the promotion. Then you can make your first bet and enjoy the sports betting experience.

Responsible Gambling Louisiana

Now that you are ready to make a sports bet, it’s time to talk about responsible gambling. New players might look at this section and think that it does not apply to them, but it does. That is because responsible gambling tools can help you stay in control before your betting activity gets out of hand. Think of it as a safety net should your bets not be as successful as you think. You can set limits on your deposits, and the period you spend betting, plus you can block your account from placing further wagers.

Besides the official tools we recommend all players use, there are a few tips we feel obliged to give residents of Louisiana. The first tip is to take your time placing a sports bet. Odds fluctuate all the time at a sportsbook. Sometimes being patient will cause you to miss out, other times it will end up giving you an even bigger margin. However, there will be some occasions where taking a moment will help you see things clearly. Rushing your betting activity is not a smart way to play and it will cost you money.

Another tip we found useful is to not bet every week. That is because there are plenty of weeks where no wager catches our eye. Either the bet seems unlikely or the returns are not worth the risk, so we decide not to bet. Every time we have cobbled together a last-minute wager, it has always been a waste of time. Having the strength not to bet has saved us hundreds of dollars over the past few months. You do not need to follow our gambling tips, but please at least check out the responsible gambling tools.
