1. DraftKings

DraftKings-App.jpg

If you are looking for the best, DraftKings could be the sportsbook for you. The service began as a fantasy sports operator, offering daily contests across a wide range of sports. When the Supreme Court changed the rules in 2018, this allowed DraftKings to expand into sports betting. The online sportsbook is now available in 21 states. DraftKings also runs a fantastic online casino in a select few states and the NFT Marketplace. This is where sports fans can buy and collect sports-related NFTs safely. Even if you have no interest in cryptocurrency, DraftKings is an impressive sports betting platform.

Focusing on the sportsbook, DraftKings has a lot of positives to mention. Perhaps the most important part of a sports betting site is the odds. DraftKings has consistent odds across multiple sports. That means wagers placed at DraftKings are, on average, more profitable when compared to the competition. The sportsbook is one of the largest in Maryland, with over 20 events for all players to bet on. If you are looking for promotions, DraftKings always offers bonuses during big events like the Masters and March Madness. However, it is a little quiet when the big events are not on. Even with fewer promotions compared to the competition, DraftKings remains one of the best sportsbooks in America.

2. FanDuel

FanDuel-App.jpg

FanDuel shares a lot of similarities with DraftKings. They both started as fantasy sports providers, and they also offer an online sportsbook widely available across America. The major difference between the two is that FanDuel feels easier for new players to use, both the sports betting app and fantasy sports service. However, DraftKings offers better odds at the sportsbook on average and higher paying contests for fantasy contests.

Another difference between the two is that FanDuel offers an excellent live sports betting service. This is where you can watch games using a live stream or check various match statistics to help you make a live bet. You can also watch along using the animated graphic which updates to show each play. Also, FanDuel offers promotions regularly compared to DraftKings. If you are confident with your sports betting knowledge, then DraftKings might be a better choice. But if this is your first time making a sports wager in Maryland, FanDuel is easier for new players to understand.

3. Caesars

Caesars-App.jpg

If you are looking for an alternative to the likes of FanDuel and DraftKings, Caesars is a great place to start. For those of you who don’t know, Caesars handles many casinos across America. This is important, as you can create a sports betting account and earn reward points when you play at any Caesar's establishment. The reward system has a mixture of prizes, such as discounts on holidays and free hotel stays.

Looking at the sportsbook, Caesars is usually one of the best for variety. That includes a range of motorsports, such as Formula 1 and the MotoGP series. Since the start of 2023, Caesars has stepped up the number of promotions on offer. Players can claim boosts for the start of the MLB season and during March Madness. The sportsbook also has an excellent live betting section, but it does not support live streaming. Overall, Caesars is a fantastic online sports betting site thanks to a wide collection of markets and a unique rewards system.

4. BetRivers

BetRivers-App.jpg

BetRivers is another popular online sports betting platform thanks to the collection of markets you can bet on. As far as sports betting sites go, BetRivers is consistent with offering an enormous selection of events from all over the world. The service offers a mix of motorsports, plus a range of exciting events like Jai Alai. If you are looking for the biggest range of sports, BetRivers has 27 to choose from; the most in Maryland.

The promotions at BetRivers are often up there with the best, as they have various bonuses for all players to claim throughout the year. This includes insurance on the first goal scorer in the NHL, plus the same promo for the NBA. They also offer players several ways to claim bet boosts and free bets by wagering on certain events. Besides the bonuses, BetRivers has one of the best live betting services in the state. It has a vast collection of detailed statistics about each sporting event. These stats are available for all players before, during, and after a game. If promotions are important to you, then you will struggle to find a better service in Maryland than BetRivers.

5. BetMGM

BetMGM-App.jpg

BetMGM has a lot of similarities to Caesars. They both operate several fantastic casinos across America and have an excellent sports betting service. Plus, each sportsbook has a similar number of sports you can bet on. There are more events at BetMGM as you will find uncommon sports like the Biathlon, snooker, and rugby. If you are only interested in baseball, basketball, or football, BetMGM has a large mixt of wagers to consider.

BetMGM also offers players an excellent live betting service and a reward system similar to Caesars. Players can collect reward points towards various prizes, such as holidays and free meals. The promotions at BetMGM can be plentiful, especially around large sporting events. During the run-up to the Super Bowl and World Series, there were some great bonuses for all players to claim. However, when the big events conclude, there were few opportunities to claim promotions. If you are looking at joining BetMGM, it is one of the best sports betting sites in Maryland.

6. Barstool

Barstool-App.jpg

If you are looking for a popular online sportsbook, Barstool has a cult following. The sports betting site is now available in 14 states, making the service one of the most widely available in America. Plus, the sportsbook sees an overlap with the Barstool team. For those of you who don’t know, Barstool has various personalities that create sports-based content every week. Sometimes these personalities contribute to the sportsbook with boosted bets and customized parlays. These bets can act as inspiration for you to create a new wager, or they could result in a payday.

There is a good range of events at Barstool, including a variety of motorsports and other popular sports across America. The sportsbook does not give out promotions regularly but, since the start of March Madness, there have been several bonuses for all players to enjoy. This includes free bets, bet boosts, and even wagers with insurance. If you are a fan of Barstool, then the online sportsbook will suit you perfectly. Even if you have no interest in the content Barstool creates, the sportsbook is one of the best in Maryland.

7. PointsBet

PointsBet-App.jpg

The PointsBet Sportsbook has around 16 events to bet on, less than you would see at any of the sports betting sites listed so far. To make up for the small selection, PointsBet is running a 60-day promotion. The promo is called the Power Hour, and it will give all players the chance to claim the same game parlay bonus bet to use on any sport every day. That means if you log in between 6-7 PM, they will give you a free bet between April 1 and May 30, 2023.

PointsBet is not usually so active with promotions. The best way for players to get free bets is to save up reward points. Every bet you make contributes to your reward point tally, and once you have enough, you can claim a free bet. PointsBet also supports partial cash outs on most sports bets. This allows players to withdraw a certain amount from the original wager without ending it completely. You could take out your stake and let the profit ride, a feature you won’t commonly find at sportsbooks in Maryland. If this was your first sports betting site, PointsBet would not let you down.

8. Betfred

Betfred-App.jpg

Betfred is a mobile-exclusive sports betting app now available in Maryland. The sportsbook launched in February 2023, making it the newest service in the state. Betfred is a popular choice across America as it has a vibrant reward system. The sportsbook also offers players a fantastic range of boosted bets. Betfred regularly increases the odds of several wagers, giving players greater returns if the bet comes true. If you are looking for an alternative to the most popular online sportsbooks in America, Betfred is a fantastic option. The service has now launched in ten states, showing just how popular Betfred is.

9. betParx - Coming Soon

BetParx-App.jpg

There is a lot of confusion surrounding betParx in Maryland. For starters, betParx has partnered with the Green Turtle to bring two retail sports betting locations to MD. They have not confirmed when these retail locations will open, but it will most likely be later this year. The online sportsbook has also not launched yet, something you can expect to change later in 2023.

10. Bally Bet – Coming Soon

Bally-Bet-App.jpg

In early December 2022, the Maryland Lottery announced that two new sports betting services had received a license to operate. The services in question were Bally Bet and WynnBET. However, neither service has launched yet in 2023. There are rumors that the launch is coming soon, but there is no official date set in stone.

11. WynnBET – Coming Soon

WynnBET-App.jpg

As we mentioned, WynnBET received a license to operate in Maryland on December 2, 2022. Since then, there has been no confirmation of a launch date and the service is still not available. WynnBET will most likely launch in 2023 for MD residents, but exactly when is anyone’s guess. If you are curious about WynnBET, we have reviewed the sportsbook in great detail. Be sure to check that out if you want to know more about the service.

12. Fanatics Sportsbook – Coming soon

Fanatics-Sportsbook-App.jpg

Fanatics have been bringing officially licensed sports merchandise across America for several years. Now they are shifting their focus towards providing a vibrant sportsbook. These plans include opening retail locations and launching an online platform. There is talk that Fanatics is in talks to acquire betParx, which could change the sports betting market in Maryland and the rest of America. Neither company has confirmed any details yet, so stay tuned for more information.

13. SuperBook - Coming Soon

SuperBook-App.jpg

In the latest round of sports betting license applications, they have added two more names to the list in Maryland. SuperBook received a license on February 15, 2023, meaning it is too early to confirm an official launch date. However, we can confirm that a SuperBook Bar and Restaurant will replace Dempsey’s Brew House at Camden Yards. Not only will we get a new online sportsbook, but we will also be able to visit a new retail location at one of the best MLB stadiums in America, Oriole Park.

14. Crab Sports - Coming Soon

Crab-Sports-App.jpg

For those of you who don’t know, Crab Sports signed a deal with Internet Vikings back in July 2022. They formed the unlikely alliance to enter Maryland as a sports betting provider. Recently, the Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency approved Crab Sports and SuperBook to operate in MD. We don’t have an official launch date to announce, but you can expect to see Crab Sports later this year.

15. TwinSpires – Closed Down

TwinSpires-App.jpg

The TwinSpires Sportsbook launched a retail lounge at the Ocean Downs Casino in Maryland back on December 17, 2021. That was the ninth state to accept TwinSpires as a sports betting operator. However, TwinSpires announced it will shut down its online sports betting platform plus online casino in February 2022.

The History of Sports Betting in Maryland

Every state in America has a unique experience with sports betting. That is because it was illegal nationwide until 2018 when the Supreme Court overruled the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. From 2018 onwards, each state in America could legalize and regulate sports betting. Below is a timeline of events of how things unfolded in Maryland.

  • February 22, 1992: Sen DeConcini introduced the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act to the Senate. The bill will prohibit sports betting nationwide.
  • June 2, 1992: The Senate passes the bill with only five votes against and 88 for.
  • October 28, 1992: The president of the United States, George Bush, signed the PASPA into law. Sports betting is now illegal across America, except in a handful of locations, like Nevada.
  • June 2017: Many years of failed campaigns leads the Supreme Court to finally listen to oral arguments against the PASPA.
  • May 2018: After months of deliberating, the Supreme Court overrules the 1992 PASPA because it is not constitutional. Now each state can decide to legalize and regulate sports betting.
  • November 3, 2020: Voters approve motions to legalize sports betting in MD. The process to get the framework in place begins now.
  • May 18, 2021: Governor Larry Hogan signs HB 940 into law. Sports betting will become legal later in 2021 with an official date set in December.
  • December 9, 2021: Hogan places the first legal sports bet in Maryland at the MGM National Harbor Casino. Retail sports betting is now legal.
  • November 21, 2022: Maryland soft launches mobile sports betting from 2 PM until 10 PM.
  • November 23, 2022: Mobile sports betting is now legal. Seven mobile sportsbooks begin taking sports bets on opening day. You can sign up at DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, BetRivers, PointsBet, and Barstool.
  • December 2, 2022: WynnBET and Bally Bet become the next two mobile sports betting platforms to receive a license in Maryland.
  • February 10, 2023: Betfred is the latest online sports betting platform to launch in Maryland.
  • February 15, 2023: SuperBook and Crab Sports become the newest online sportsbooks to receive approval from the Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Agency.
  • February 24, 2023: betParx announces a partnership to launch two retail sportsbooks at Green Turtle establishments. The online sportsbook is also yet to fully launch.
  • April 2023: The mobile sportsbooks with licenses but have not yet launched in Maryland include betParx, Bally Bet, WynnBET, Fanatics, SuperBook, and Crab Sports.

Who can Legally Bet on Sports in Maryland?

If you are new to sports betting, each state has different rules for residents to follow. Some of these rules are straightforward; others can be a little more complex. Below are the rules you need to know if you want to join a sportsbook in Maryland.

  • Legal Age: If you want to make a sports bet in the state of Maryland, you must be 21 years of age or older. That applies to online sportsbooks and retail locations such as casinos.
  • Mobile Betting: Using a mobile app to place bets in Maryland is completely legal, and it is the most convenient way to use a sportsbook. All mobile apps have security measures to help protect your funds and your account from other players.
  • State Lines: To place a valid sports bet in Maryland, you must be within state lines. That means your account will not work if you try to place a wager in a neighboring state. You can access your account from other states to deposit or withdraw funds.
  • Retail Locations: Maryland has retail locations where players can make bets using cash. Some of these establishments also allow players to withdraw from their digital account at the sportsbook. This is the only way to get a cash withdrawal if you use your online account.
  • Remote Registration: If you want to register for online sports betting, you can do it from anywhere in the state. You do not need to go to a retail location with a valid ID. Instead, you can sign up at home or anywhere with a stable internet connection.

If there are multiple sportsbooks with the events you want to bet on, then you can use other features to split them apart. Some of these sports betting sites have an excellent assortment of promotions and others have a dedicated rewards system. Also, some sports are seasonal, meaning they can appear or disappear throughout the year. Just remember, usually the sportsbooks with the most markets also have the most leagues from across the world.

What can’t you Bet on in Maryland?

Each state in America has events that residents cannot bet on. This varies across the country with some states restricting college-level bets and others stopping players from wagering on eSports competitions. Below is a list of all the events players in Maryland can’t bet on.

  • Politics
  • Online Casino Games
  • Award Ceremonies (Oscars)

If you have heard rumors about the rules above becoming legal, there are a couple of aspects to consider. The first is that laws regarding sports betting take a long time to change, meaning it might be months or years before we see any actual difference. The next point to consider is that to get something legalized, it has to pass a series of votes. If these votes fail, it can be several years before the legislation gets the chance to be voted on again.

Types of Bets at Maryland Online Sportsbooks

What types of wagers can you place at Maryland sportsbooks? There are many types of sports bets to make, including some rather complex wagers. Parlays allow players to combine different sports and types of bets into one high-paying wager. Below is a list of the bets you can make in Maryland.

  • Moneylines
  • Spreads
  • Totals
  • Parlays
  • Same Game Parlays
  • Props
  • Futures
  • Teasers
  • Round Robins
  • Live Bets

Every sportsbook in Maryland supports these types of wagers, but they are not available for every sport. Spread bets are usually only found in American events, like basketball, football, and hockey. They do not apply to sports like soccer and tennis. Plus, the best sportsbooks will have the largest collection of wagers to choose from. Sportsbooks like DraftKings can offer over 200 wagers at one event.

Tax Rate for Online Gambling Maryland

If you win money gambling, you must pay tax on it. Most states consider winnings from casinos and sportsbooks as a source of income, meaning you have to declare it. When filing your taxes, they combine your gambling winnings and personal income. That means the tax you will pay is often determined by how much you make in a year. If you are unsure how much that is, there are lots of free calculators out there that will give you an accurate estimation.

Maryland has a graduated tax system, meaning the more money you earn, the more tax you pay. The tax bands range from two percent up to around six at the highest. The most you will pay on state tax for your gambling winnings is 5.75% if you are one of the state's top earners. However, there are other tax considerations to make. For example, social security and federal tax contributions can rise as high as 37% for the top earners.

Maryland Online Sports Betting Revenue

In case you are unaware, sports betting has proven to be a lucrative industry across America. States have reported record-breaking months stretching well over $500 million spent by players. To give you an insight into how much sports betting is worth in Maryland, we have a table of the most recent months of betting activity to see how much is being spent.

December 2022January 2023February 2023
Handle$498.1M$497.1M$339.2M
Gross Winnings$411.9M$381.8M$299.2M
Revenue$85.1M$59.6M$40.2M

Sports betting towards the end of the NFL season was incredibly popular in Maryland, with players spending just under $500 million each month. In February, the betting activity reduced to under $340M, a decline of around $160M. This is normal when looking at most states across America. They all have months of insane betting activity which calms down depending on what sports are available.

Payment Methods at MD Sportsbooks

Payment methods are an important part of an online sportsbook that new players often overlook. It is easy to assume that a sports betting site makes it easy for players to deposit and withdraw their funds, but that is not always the case. Some sportsbooks restrict players to just a handful of options, making it difficult to stay in control of your money. We always recommend players check out the payment methods before signing up.

That is why we created two helpful tables. These tables will show you every active sports betting site, plus all the methods you can use to deposit or withdraw your cash. Some of these sportsbooks will accept cash payments using the PayNearMe service, while others will only allow you to make digital deposits. Make sure you check a sportsbook's methods before you sign up as you do not want to have to wait for ages for your funds or deal with support agents. Also, you do not need to join the service with the most options available. Just look for the payment type that is most convenient for you.

Deposits

There are eight sports betting sites currently available in Maryland with up to six more launching in 2023. However, each service offers players a different array of payment methods to choose from. Some support American Express, PayPal, and wire transfers, whereas others offer a much smaller range to choose from. If you are looking to make deposits using cash, check out the table below.

No matter which sportsbook or payment method you choose, each one has a variety of tools to help you control your spending. It is easy to get carried away and end up spending way more than anticipated. That is why there are many features on each sportsbook to help control spending. We encourage all new players to use the tools provided.

Withdrawals

Each sports betting site in Maryland is different, and that also applies to the withdrawal methods. The speed of your withdrawal differs at each sportsbook, plus the method you use. Services like PayPal and Play+ usually pay out quicker than online banking or using a debit card. However, withdrawal requests can take longer at busy times of the year, such as Super Bowl weekend. Make sure you take this into account when making your withdrawal.

Most sports betting platforms have additional layers of security for withdrawals. This is where payment methods may not appear for certain players until they have deposited using this method. PayPal accounts are usually the easiest way for a hacker to run off with all your winnings. Sportsbooks enforce this rule to provide an extra layer of security between you and your funds.

That is because every sportsbook in Maryland has a welcome offer, but which ones are good and are there any you should avoid? Free Bets

Free bets are the best way to experience an online sportsbook. Because you can make a wager on any sport you want without having to risk your money. Winning a free bet means you can keep all the profit, apart from the value of the wager. Once you place a bet, the value from the free bet is gone, even if you decide to cash out.

Often, free bets do not have any restrictions, but this can change depending on the promotion. That is why we encourage all players to read the terms and conditions before claiming a bonus. Each promo will have a unique set of conditions that players must meet to qualify for the wager. If you fail to meet, the criteria specified in the fine print, you could lose out on your free bet.

Best Sites for Free Bets

Promotions and bonuses change at every sportsbook throughout the year. A sportsbook that is full of free bets during the NFL season may have none once the Super Bowl is over. These are aspects to consider when joining a sportsbook, on top of the various other features we have mentioned throughout this guide. The sites we list below have a consistent stream of bonuses throughout the year, making your job a little easier.

  • BetRivers: Make three MLB same game parlays for a $10 free bet.
  • FanDuel: Make a $25 bet on a player to hit a home run on the MLB and get a $5 free bet for each home run scored on Tuesday.
  • BetMGM: Bet $20 on Augusta for a $10 free bet.

Risk-Free Bets

The most common risk-free bet is a welcome bonus to help new players get started. The size of these offers ranges from a couple of hundred bucks to well over $1,000. You do not need to use every part of the promotion if you do not want to. Making a $1,000 starting bet could be an easy way to say goodbye to your cash, as some sportsbooks give you a series of free bets rather than one big one if your first wager loses. That means you could be stuck with dozens of small free bets that all expire after seven days.

To avoid any of these problems or confusion, always read the terms and conditions. This is where you can find out what sports are eligible for your welcome offer plus whether you will receive one free bet equal to your stake or lots of small ones. You should only gamble with what you can afford to lose.

Best Sites for Risk-Free Bets

  • FanDuel: New players at FanDuel get a $1,000 risk-free bet welcome offer. Plus, anyone can claim the Augusta winner insurance, which gives players a refund in free bets if their player finished in the top 20.
  • BetRivers: Sign up to BetRivers for a $500 risk-free bet to help new players get started. You can also get your money back if your golfer finishes in the top ten at Augusta. Also, if you bet on a player to hit a home run on Tuesday, you get a free bet worth up to $25 if they record a base hit during the game. Plus, get your money back as a free bet if your four-leg MLB same game parlay fails by one leg.
  • BetMGM: Any new member at BetMGM gets a $1,000 risk-free wager on their first bet.

Odds Boosts

Every sportsbook in Maryland has a section for wagers that they have boosted. That means the wagers have increased in profitability, earning you more cash if the bet comes true. In some circumstances, a sports betting site will give players profit boosts. This is where you can apply a boost to your wager, drastically increasing the returns. The size of the boost varies depending on the sportsbook you join or the number of legs in your parlay. Below are the most consistent sites for profit boosts and increasing your returns.

How to Get Started at Maryland Sportsbook

DraftKings-Register.PNG

Before you register at a sports betting site, you need to check the welcome offer. Some of the welcome offers available in Maryland have strict terms and conditions you must meet to claim your bonus. This can include entering a promo code while signing up. If you forget to enter the code during the registration process, you can miss out on your bonus. To help new players get started without missing out, we have created a step-by-step guide for anyone looking to register in Maryland.

Step 1

First, you will need to download a copy of the sportsbook to your mobile device, and then you can start the registration process. This is where you will enter your email address plus choose a username or password. Make sure you choose a new password that is unique to your sports betting account to reduce the risk of hacking. Before continuing to the next step, make sure you check the welcome offer and see if there is a code needed to claim a bonus.

Step 2

The next step is where you enter your personal information. This includes your address, date of birth, and other bits like your name and gender. It is at this point most sportsbooks will have an optional promo box for you to enter a code. If you have a referral code from a friend, this is the time to put it in or the code for the welcome bonus. Once you complete the registration process, you won’t be able to go back. Make sure you get it right the first time around.

Step 3

Next, you must enter the last four digits of your social security number. The sportsbook uses this information to confirm your identity and whether you are eligible for sports betting. Some sportsbooks allow players to register using other forms of ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. Using other forms of ID can take longer for your account to be active.

Step 4

The last step before you can make a deposit is to verify your account. You can achieve this either by clicking through an email or entering a code sent to your cell phone. They do not allow players to deposit on a sportsbook until they have completed this stage. That is why it’s crucial you use an email and mobile number you have access.

Step 5

Now you are ready to make your first deposit and place your first wager. Make sure you read the terms and conditions one more time to ensure you won’t void your bonus. This is because some sportsbooks only apply the risk-free bet on wagers with odds worth -200 or greater. Plus, they can set limits for the minimum you must deposit to qualify for the bonus. Once this is complete, you are free to enjoy the sportsbook as you like. You can deposit more funds, bet on various events, and then hopefully withdraw your winnings.
