We've compiled a summary of all nine sportsbooks in New York to assist you in selecting the best one for your needs. If you want to discover more about a service, we have in-depth reviews of the leading sports betting platforms. Make sure you do your research before you sign up to avoid wasting your own time and money.

1. FanDuel

FanDuel-App.jpg

FanDuel is one of the most popular online sportsbooks across America. It is one of the best for residents of New York because it’s one of the most straightforward platforms for new players to use. That applies to daily fantasy sports and sports betting services. If you are searching for a regular stream of promos, FanDuel is consistent across the year.

Many compare FanDuel to DraftKings. We found similarities and stark differences. If you are new to sports betting, a service like FanDuel is the perfect place to learn the ropes. Plus, it has one of the best live betting systems in New York. However, if you already have sportsbook experience, DraftKings might be a better option.

2. BetMGM

BetMGM-App.jpg

BetMGM is another popular choice for players in New York. It’s one of the best sportsbooks for players trying to claim as many promotions as possible. They regularly introduce new promos for all players to enjoy across different sports. Plus, it has one of the largest assortments of leagues and sports to bet on in NY.

There is a fantastic reward system at BetMGM. This is where players collect points from the sports bets they place. You can exchange these points for unique prizes, such as free hotel stays at MGM Resorts. Also, you can claim promotions to use in the sportsbook. If you plan on staying at one sports betting platform, BetMGM is a fantastic option. Not only do they reward loyal players, but they give out promotions weekly.

3. DraftKings

DraftKings-App.jpg

If you are looking for the best, many believe it has to be DraftKings. While it is less user-friendly than FanDuel or offers as many promotions as BetMGM, it is an excellent sportsbook. When we conducted our review, we found DraftKings had consistently greater odds across multiple sports. This meant a wager placed at DraftKings was higher paying when compared to the competition.

DraftKings also offers players daily fantasy sports and an NFT Marketplace. The Marketplace brings sports and cryptocurrency together, as you can buy and sell limited edition NFTs. Even if you have no interest in crypto, it’s great to see a company try new things and give players more choices. If you are only interested in sports betting, DraftKings is an excellent place to do it.

4. Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars-App.jpg

While BetMGM has ties to Las Vegas, Caesars Sportsbook is perhaps the most iconic in all of America. For those of you who don’t know, Caesars handles a multitude of casinos in Las Vegas and resorts across America. This may not sound relevant, but when you create an account at Caesars, you can earn reward points towards free stays or meals at any of these hotels.

If you are not interested in the rewards, how does Caesars Sportsbook compare to the competition? For starters, it has an outstanding live betting section. This is where you can see detailed stats about the current game, each team’s previous performances, plus a timeline of all major events. Caesars may not have the largest selection of sports to bet on, but it has all the American classics. You can bet on football, basketball, and baseball, plus various motorsports.

5. BetRivers

BetRivers-App.jpg

BetRivers is a fantastic sportsbook that many players overlook. Although it is not as popular as FanDuel, it offers excellent service. BetRivers is one of the most consistent and plentiful providers of promotions. They offer free bets and bet insurance promos every week across a variety of sports. You can also use the reward system to claim other bonuses and rewards while you play.

Plus, the sportsbook offers one of the best live betting experiences in New York. The sports betting site gives all players access to a humongous range of stats before and during a game. You can use this information to help you make an accurate bet. If live betting or promotions are important to you, then BetRivers is one of your best options.

6. PointsBet

PointsBet-App.jpg

If you are looking for a unique sportsbook, PointsBet could be one to consider. They offer a unique wager you won’t find at other sports betting sites. PointsBetting is where you can win more money depending on how correct your prediction is. We explain how the wager works in our review, but it could be an exciting way for you to gamble.

The sportsbook lacks in some areas. It offers players far fewer promotions than the services listed above. Instead, there is an excellent reward system where players can earn free bets during the year. Besides an active reward system, PointsBet is great for live betting and placing futures. It’s an excellent app for new and experienced players to place sports bets in New York.

7. WynnBET

WynnBET-App.jpg

Not every sports betting platform in New York has a vast library of sports to bet on. Some services only offer the most popular sports for players to bet on across America. WynnBET offers a more condensed library, which could be perfect for some players. If you have no interest in betting on Slovakian soccer or Venezuelan volleyball, WynnBET could be a perfect solution.

WynnBET's biggest strength has to be the promotions. It is one of the most active in NY for bonuses. Players can claim free bets weekly by betting on specified sports and events. There is also a reward system where you can claim free bets once you have enough points. Overall, WynnBET might not be the biggest, but it's up there with the best.

8. Resorts World Bet

Resorts-World-Bet-App.jpg

If you want to avoid all the big names listed above, Resorts World Bet is here for you. Although it might not have the same reputation as other services on our list does not mean you are missing out. The mobile app is fantastic to use, and it has all the sports you would expect. Plus, if you are a fan of promotions, you can claim multiple profit boosts every day.

Resorts World Bet also offers players an exciting reward system. This is where you can save up and claim free bets to use on any sport or event available on the sportsbook. When the service was first available in New York, we found it lacking in several areas. However, it is clear now that Resorts World Bet is up there with the best online sportsbooks in the state.

9. Bally Bet

Bally-Bet-App.jpg

Bally Bet was the ninth-best sports betting platform in New York until recently. On June 30th, 2023, the service temporarily shut down. If you have been following Bally Bet, they have made no secret of a redesign for their mobile sports betting app. However, the entire service is now offline for the foreseeable future.

They have not confirmed when the new service will launch, and the current sportsbook remains unavailable across America. Plus, there is no retail location inside New York state. If you want to bet at the sportsbook, visit Bally’s Atlantic City in New Jersey. Otherwise, you must wait for the new launch of the Bally Bet mobile app.

The History of Sports Betting in New York

Like most states in America, the road to legalizing sports betting in New York was not straightforward. New York was one of the first states to open retail sportsbooks and take bets in person. Who can Legally Bet on Sports in New York?+

In case you did not know, each state may license and regulate sports betting. That means the rules can differ drastically depending on your state. To help keep things as simple as possible, below are some rules that apply to the state of New York.

  • Legal Gambling Age: The legal age to gamble in New York is 18. However, some casinos impose a 21 and over policy. This is because while it is legal for an 18-year-old to gamble, it is still illegal for anyone below 21 to drink alcohol. Some casinos enforce a higher age gap as they serve alcohol on the casino floor. However, there is a lot of confusion around this number. For sports betting, most services will refuse players under the age of 21.
  • Mobile Betting: Sports betting has been legal in New York since 2019, but mobile betting has only been legal for a year. They changed the rules, allowing mobile sports betting companies to take bets on January 8, 2022. The state of New York is strict over mobile sports betting, and only nine approved online sportsbooks can operate in state lines.
  • State Lines: You must be within New York State to place a valid sports bet. All mobile sports betting apps have geolocation software built in to ensure you are in the state of New York when placing a bet.
  • Retail Locations: New York is a state where retail locations came long before online sports betting. There are multiple casinos, racetracks, or other venues with a sportsbook inside. These facilities usually have lots of comfy seats, big screens, and food to enjoy while the game is on.
  • Registration: You can register for sports betting easily in New York. You can use your PC or mobile device and visit a sportsbook to open an account. The easiest way to join a sportsbook is to download it to your smartphone or tablet.

Online Sports Betting Markets in NY

Although sports betting sites may look similar, they all have a different range of sports for us to bet on. Some sportsbooks, like DraftKings and BetRivers, traditionally have more sports on offer than other betting sites. However, the selection can change throughout the year. Certain sports are seasonal, meaning you won’t be able to bet on them all year round.

How can you find out what is available from an online sportsbook? The best way to find out is to download the mobile app and find out for yourself. We have some fantastic reviews at Bet Station, where you can find out what sports are on offer. But the most reliable way to see what you can bet on is to check for yourself.

What can’t you Bet on in New York?

No matter what state you are from, there are certain events you cannot bet on. All states have a rule regarding political events, but New York has a few more restrictions to consider. In some ways, New York is more relaxed than your average state. However, there are specific rules surrounding college teams which we outline below.

  • No bets on any New York college teams.
  • No prop bets on college sports.
  • Must bet on athletic competitions, no award ceremonies such as the Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys.
  • Not allowed to bet on high school sports.
  • You cannot bet on political events or elections.
  • Cannot bet on the length of the national anthem or Gatorade color.

Many of the rules listed above apply in states across America. It is common for residents to cannot place a bet on high school sports or award ceremonies. Even the restriction for college teams based in the state also applies to several other states. Overall, the regulations in New York are stricter than in neighboring states. However, there are plenty of other states with similar stipulations.

Types of Bets at New York Online Sportsbooks

Now that you know what you can’t bet on in New York, let’s inspect what you can bet on in the Empire State. Most bets are legal in New York. Placing a prop bet on a player to score or assist in one game is fine. But placing a bet on the color of the drink dumped on the winning coach is illegal. Below is a list of the bets you can place in New York.

  • Spread Bets
  • Moneylines
  • Over Unders/Totals
  • Proposition Bets
  • Parlays
  • Same Game Parlays
  • Teasers
  • Futures
  • Live Bets
  • Round Robins

If you are yet to make a sports bet, what should you look out for? We recommend new players start with simple wagers. The moneyline and over under are two of the easiest bets to understand and they are usually a 50-50 chance to win some cash. More experienced players can look at spreads and parlays, plus proposition bets can be a lot of fun. If you want to know more about any type of wager, check out the betting guides we have at Bet Station.

New York Online Gambling Tax Rates

Every state has a different tax rate when talking about online gambling. When filing your taxes, you must declare your winnings as income. The amount you pay in tax depends on how much you earn in the year. The taxable rate in New York ranges from 4% for the lowest earners to 10.9%. This may sound intimidating, but the top tax band only applies to anyone earning over $25 million.

Like most states, there has been a recent discussion to adjust the state tax level for New York. This number is subject to change, but we will ensure the information at Bet Station is as correct and up-to-date as possible.

New York Sports Betting Revenue

Sports betting in New York is worth an absolute fortune. That is because NY is one of the most popular states in America for sports betting. In April 2023, residents of New York wagered 1.5 billion dollars. The table offers a closer inspection of the more recent months New Yorkers spent on mobile sportsbooks.

April 2023May 2023June 2023Total
Mobile Sports Betting Handle$1.54bn$1.35bn$1.16bn$4.06bn
Mobile Gross Gaming Revenue$138.8M$151.9M$103.8M$394.6M

As you can see, the amount people spent is significantly higher than the average state. Across three months, players spent over four billion dollars at online sportsbooks. With this much money being thrown around, you can see why legislation is slow to change. However, given how much sports betting is now worth to NY, you can expect to see more relaxed rules in the future.

Payment Methods at NY Sportsbooks

Another way in which sports betting sites can differ is in the payment methods they offer. Some sportsbooks have a selection of methods, whereas others are far less accommodating. Sports betting sites can support online banking, credit cards, gift cards, and cash. We only recommend joining a service where it is quick and easy to get your money in and winnings out.

Deposits

No two sportsbooks in New York will offer the same range of payment methods. That is because there are over a dozen ways for players to deposit their funds into sports betting accounts. Fortunately, given the popularity of sports betting in New York, most sportsbooks have a wide selection.

If you want to know more about a service, check out our detailed reviews. Plus, if you download a copy of the mobile app to your cell phone, you can view what methods they support. If you want to deal with support agents, you can also contact them for assistance.

Withdrawals

Most sports betting sites make withdrawing your winnings a straightforward process. Each sportsbook has a different range of methods to consider, most of which are free. One of the quickest and most widely accepted ways to withdraw funds is through PayPal.

It is not uncommon for sports betting sites to have additional security for withdrawals. If you want to withdraw via PayPal after depositing from your credit card, some sportsbooks won’t give you the option. This is because they will only allow PayPal withdrawals once you have deposited using this payment method. It may sound annoying, but it could protect your funds if someone gained access to your account.

Betting on New York Sports Teams

If you want to bet on sports teams based in New York, you have a lot of teams to consider. Most states only have a couple of professional teams for fans to enjoy, but that is not the case in The Big Apple. Not only can you bet on the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL, but they have multiple franchises for each sport.

New York Mets Betting

New-York-Mets.jpg

The Mets are one of two professional baseball teams in New York. Founded in 1962, the Mets were one of the first expansion teams. The team replaced the departing Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants. Since joining the MLB, the Mets have won two World Series, one in 1969 and the other in 1986.

Originally, the Mets played out of the Polo Grounds before moving into Shea Stadium in 1964. In 2009, the franchise moved into Citi Field, one of the best MLB ballparks. They constructed the new stadium opposite the previous ground. This time, the home of the Mets is a specially designed venue just for baseball, not a multi-purpose sports facility.

New York Yankees Betting

New-York-Yankees-logo.jpg

The New York Yankees are the most successful baseball franchise in history. They have won the World Series 27 times from 1923 to 2009. The Yankees have also won 20 AL East Division titles and 40 AL Pennants. Plus, if you are looking for intense rivalries, the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry is one of the most famous in North America.

The Yankees play out of Yankee Stadium, one of the most expensive sports venues ever built. Originally, the franchise played out of Hilltop Park and the Polo Grounds. It wasn’t until 1923 that the franchise had a dedicated stadium. The first Yankee Stadium was in use until 2008, with a brief gap in the mid-1970s when it went under extensive renovation. During that time, the Yankees played at Shea Stadium, sharing it with the Mets.

Betting on the New York Giants

New-York-Giants-logo.jpg

The New York Giants were one of five teams to join the NFL in 1925. This longevity has also seen a lot of success. The Giants won the NFL Championships on four occasions and the Super Bowl four times. They also have 11 Conference Championships, 16 Division titles in the NFC East and NFL Eastern, and 33 playoff appearances.

The Giants are another sports team with historic ties to the Polo Grounds. They stayed at the grounds until 1955 before moving into Yankee Stadium. Over the next few years, they moved to the Yale Bowl and Shea Stadium before settling into the Giants Stadium. In 2010, the new MetLife Stadium opened, costing over $1.6 billion.

New York Jets Betting

New-York-Jets-logo.jpg

Both the Jets and Giants are now based in the MetLife Stadium. The stadium is technically in New Jersey, but it falls in New York City. The Jets tastes success early on in their history, beating the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship game. This saw the Jets take on the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, which many consider the greatest upset in Super Bowl history. The Jets won the day, winning their only Super Bowl appearance to date.

The franchise began life at the Polo Grounds in 1960 before calling Shea Stadium their home. In 1983, the team shared the Giants Stadium with the other NFL franchise in town before also joining the team at the MetLife Stadium. The Jets have not made a playoff appearance since 2010, especially disappointing for a team with seven appearances since 1998.

New York NHL Betting

Logo-New-York-Islanders.jpg

There are three NHL franchises in New York City, the Devils, Islanders, and Rangers. The Devils began in Kansas City as the Scouts in 1974 before moving to Colorado in 1976. The Rockies moved to New Jersey in 1982. Technically, the franchise sits outside New York State but falls under the City limits.

They founded the New York Islanders in 1972. The Islanders play out of the brand-new UBS Arena. The Franchise has one more Stanley Cup win than the Devils, with four in total. They have also won six Division and Conference Championships. The UBS Arena opened in 2021 with a maximum capacity of 17,255.

Lastly, we have the oldest NHL team in New York, the Rangers. They are one of the original six founding teams before the 1967 expansion. The team plays out of Madison Square Garden, sharing the venue with the Knicks. They also have four Stanley Cup wins, most recently in 1994.

NBA Betting in New York

New-York-Knicks-logo.jpg

Once again, there are two professional teams for fans to bet on. You can bet on the Brooklyn Nets or New York Knicks. The Nets joined the ABA in 1967 as the New Jersey American. The name lasted one season before they became the New York Nets. They moved to New Jersey in 1977 before going to Brooklyn in 2012. The franchise won two ABA Championships but has yet to win the NBA Finals.

The New York Knicks started playing professional basketball in 1946. They won two NBA championships thanks to legendary coach Red Holzman, one of the best coaches of all time. The team has eight division titles, the same number of times they have made it to the NBA Finals. The Knicks are one of two NBA founding teams still in their original city.

MLS Betting New York

New-York-City-FC.jpg

Soccer is incredibly popular in New York, and there are two fantastic teams to bet on. New York City FC is a relatively new team, entering the league in 2015. They play out of the Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. The New York Red Bulls are another New York team, but they play their games in New Jersey. The Red Bull Arena is in Harrison, New Jersey, and it can hold 25,000 spectators.

College Betting in New York

Cornell-Big-Red-logo.jpg

While there are plenty of universities in the state of New York, betting on the teams is not allowed. You can bet on college-level sports across America. However, there is a rule in New York that stops residents from betting on home teams. This rule is not exclusive to NY. There are other states across America with the same ethos. However, that does not change the fact that you can't bet on Cornell, Syracuse, or any other university team.

Comparison of New York Online Sportsbooks

Now that we are towards the end of the betting guide, it's time to look back at each sportsbook. There is no one service to suit every player. Instead, each one has differences that some will enjoy and others avoid. If you are not sure where to begin, sportsbooks like FanDuel, Caesars, and BetMGM are excellent starting points.

If you have some betting experience, then DraftKings is another fantastic option. But, other services in the state are more consistent with promotions, such as WynnBET and BetRivers. Only you know what type of sportsbook will suit you, so don't be afraid to try one out. If you don't like it, there are eight other services available in the state.

How to Get Started on New York Sportsbooks

DraftKings-SignUP-New-York.PNG

Signing up for a sports betting site in New York can be troublesome. There are several steps to follow before you can make your first bet. Some of these sportsbooks require players to enter a specific code when registering. Failing to do so can cause you to miss out on your bonus. To avoid missing out, we have created a step-by-step guide for new players.

Step 1

The first step is to choose which sportsbook you are going to join. There are currently only nine options for us to consider. This may sound like a lot, but when you compare it to Colorado, there are 24 sportsbooks available in the Centennial State. Choosing the correct sportsbook is not vital as you can always join a different one later on if you feel you picked the wrong site.

Step 2

Once you have selected a sportsbook to join, it is time to create an account. You will need to enter your email address, choose a password, and even create a username. Once you have done this step, it’s time for your personal information. This will include your name, address, date of birth, and even your social security number.

As we mentioned above, some sportsbooks will ask you for a promo code at this point. You must enter a code here to receive your welcome bonus. Sportsbooks like Caesars will not give players a bonus if they forget to enter the code at this step. You can find the code if you visit the promotion page before you sign up.

Step 3

Once you have created and verified your account, the next stage is to make a deposit. This stage is also important for your welcome offer. If the sportsbook has a risk-free bet, then your first bet matters. If your bet wins, then you can enjoy the winnings. But if it loses, they will match your bet with a series of free bets. Make sure you read the terms and conditions to avoid losing your welcome bonus.

Step 4

Most sportsbooks have rules surrounding what qualifies for your risk-free bet. It must be over a certain amount and the odds can’t be too low. To ensure you get this right, we recommend reading the terms and conditions. The last thing to remember is to set limits on your account. Hopefully, you won’t need to worry about this, but ensuring you can’t deposit a certain amount into your account may help you avoid unnecessary losses.
