If you are new to sports betting or fantasy sports, and you live in New York, there are no better places to begin than FanDuel. That is because it is one of the easiest services to use for new players. FanDuel is a popular choice across America for this reason, plus it has a fantastic selection of sports to bet on. If promotions are important to you, then once again FanDuel will not let you down.
There are often a lot of comparisons made between FanDuel and DraftKings, but either service is excellent. If you were serious about your sports betting, you would have a wonderful experience no matter which one you choose. We feel FanDuel is best for new players, but it also has a significantly better live betting offering.

2. BetMGM
Any fans of Las Vegas might have already heard about BetMGM thanks to its world-famous hotels and casinos. However, seeing as Nevada is on the opposite side of the country when compared to New York; let’s focus just on the sports betting service. For starters, it is an excellent sportsbook for fans of promotions. It regularly introduces new and exciting promos for all players to enjoy. There is usually a consistent stream of bonuses, something you will not find at many other sportsbooks.
BetMGM also has a fantastic reward system. This is where you can collect points, whether your bet wins, loses, or ends as a push. You can redeem these points for exciting rewards, such as discounted flights, hotel stays, or promos to use on the sportsbook. If you plan on joining a sportsbook and staying loyal all season, BetMGM is a fantastic option.

3. DraftKings
One of the biggest sports betting sites in America is DraftKings. Its popularity stemmed from offering some unbelievable prizes for fantasy sports players. Now, the sportsbook is highly regarded thanks to its exciting range of sports. Compared to other sports betting sites, DraftKings offers the most sports for patrons to bet on. What makes this even better is that DraftKings has excellent odds across all sports.
If you are looking for a complete service, DraftKings is not one to overlook. It also offers players access to the NFT Marketplace, which seeks to bridge the gap between the world of sports and cryptocurrency. If you have never tested out anything crypto-related, the Marketplace is a safe and easy way to own your very first NFT. Even if you have no interest in NFTs, it’s important to see companies try to improve the sports betting space by offering even more exciting services.

4. Caesars Sportsbook
Caesars Sportsbook is another popular choice across America thanks to the company’s famous ties to Las Vegas. For those of you who don’t know, Caesars handles a multitude of casinos in Las Vegas plus several resorts across America. This may not sound relevant, but when you create an account at Caesars, you can earn reward points towards free stays or meals at any of these hotels.
If you are not interested in the rewards, how does Caesars Sportsbook compare to the competition? For starters, it has an outstanding live betting section. This is where you can see detailed stats about the current game, each team’s previous performances, plus a timeline of all major events. Caesars may not have the biggest selection of sports to bet on as there are only 16 options, but it more than covers the bases. You can bet on Formula 1, NASCAR, or Indy Car, plus all the important sports like football, basketball, and baseball.

5. BetRivers
A sportsbook that is often overlooked when compared to the likes of FanDuel or DraftKings is BetRivers. There are a huge number of positives attached to BetRivers. It is one of the best online sports betting sites in New York for promotions. This includes a variety of risk-free bets, several ways to get a free bet, plus a mix of other bonuses to enjoy as well.
If you are looking for a sportsbook that is fantastic across the board, then BetRivers is certainly one to consider. It has a bit of everything, meaning you will not feel you are missing out if you sign up yo BetRivers.
- Read our full BetRivers review.
6. PointsBet
PointsBet has one of the largest selections of sports when compared to other betting sites. There are around 13 sports available for New York residents to bet on, more than the likes of WynnBET and BetMGM. Unfortunately, the site is below average for promotions. Points Bet is not as generous with the promos as sites like BetRivers. Instead, there is more of a focus on collecting reward points to use for bonuses.
But that does not mean PointsBet is a bad sportsbook. It offers a unique type of wager called PointsBetting. This is where it pays to be right, as you can win significantly more depending on how correct your prediction is. Say you bet on Tom Brady scoring a certain number of passing yards in a game. For each yard over your prediction, you win more cash. However, each yard you are short of winning is more money out of your pocket.

7. WynnBET
A sports betting site with a more condensed library to bet on is WynnBET. While WynnBET might not have as many sports as some of the most popular sportsbooks, it does offer players a variety of promotions. WynnBET is one of the best sportsbooks for free bets, as there are multiple ways for all players to claim free bets every week. Plus, there is a reward system where you can claim free bets once you have amassed enough points.

8. Bally Bet
One of the nine sports betting sites available to residents of New York is Bally Bet. The service is only available on Android or iOS devices; there is no website for PC sports betting. It is also on the smaller side when compared to rival sportsbooks, with only around ten sports available for wagering. There is no Bally Bet retail location in New York, but you can visit Bally’s Atlantic City in New Jersey.
9. Resorts World Bet
With around 13 sports to bet on, Resorts World is the ninth and final sportsbook available in New York. It has a good mix of sports, including volleyball, football, boxing, and tennis. Unfortunately, Resorts World Bet is one of the sportsbooks that only run promos in the buildup to big sporting events. Your average week at Resorts World will be promo free.

Who can Legally Bet on Sports in New York?
In case you did not know, each state may license and regulate sports betting. That means the rules can differ drastically depending on what state you are in. To help keep things as simple as possible, below are some rules that apply to the state of New York.
- Legal Gambling Age: The legal age to gamble in New York is 18. However, some casinos impose a 21 and over policy. This is because while it is legal for an 18-year-old to gamble, it is still illegal for anyone below 21 to drink alcohol. Some casinos enforce a higher age gap so they can serve alcohol on the casino floor. However, there is a lot of confusion around this number. For sports betting, most services will refuse players under the age of 21.
- Mobile Betting: Sports betting has been legal in New York since 2019, but mobile betting has only been legal for a year. They changed the rules, allowing mobile sports betting companies to take bets from January 8, 2022. The state of New York is very strict over mobile sports betting, and only nine approved online sportsbooks can operate in state lines.
- State Lines: To make a valid bet in New York, players must be within state lines. All mobile sports betting apps have geolocation software built in to ensure you are in the state of New York when placing a bet.
- Retail Locations: New York is a state where retail locations came long before online sports betting. Meaning there are multiple casinos, racetracks, or other venues with a sportsbook inside. These facilities usually have lots of comfy seats, big screens, and food to enjoy while the game is on.
- Registration: You can register for sports betting easily in New York. You can use your PC, mobile device, or visit a sportsbook to open an account. The easiest way to join a sportsbook is to download it to your smartphone or tablet.

Just to give you a little more insight, the sports on offer at any sports betting site can change throughout the year. Certain sports are seasonal, meaning you won’t be able to bet on them at certain points in the year. The table above is a good indicator of which sportsbooks consistently offer more sports than others.
What can’t you Bet on in New York?
No matter what state you are from, there are certain events you cannot bet on. All states have a rule regarding political events, but New York has a few more restrictions to consider. In some ways, New York is more relaxed than your average state. However, there are specific rules surrounding college teams which we outline below.
- No bets on any New York college teams
- No prop bets on college sports
- Must bet on athletic competitions, no award ceremonies such as the Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys
- Not allowed to bet on high school sports
- You cannot bet on political events or elections
There may seem like a lot of rules for New York, but these are very similar to the rules you will find across America. New York might adapt these regulations in the future, given how new online sports betting is to the state. Most of these rules apply to college or high school-level sports, but there are some restrictions. Such as a limit on the props you can make during the Super Bowl. Betting on obscure events such as the length of the national anthem is not allowed in NY.
Types of Bets at New York Online Sportsbooks
Now that you know what you can’t bet on in New York, let’s inspect what you can bet on in the Empire State. The majority of bets are legal in New York if you are betting on a sporting event. Placing a prop bet on a player to score or assist a certain number of times in one game is fine. But placing a bet on the color of the drink dumped on the winning coach is illegal. Below is a list of the bets you can place right now in New York.
- Spread Bets
- Moneylines
- Over Unders/Totals
- Proposition Bets
- Parlays
- Same Game Parlays
- Teasers
- Futures
- Live Bets
- Round Robins
If you are yet to make a sports bet, what should you look out for? We recommend new players start with simple wagers. The moneyline and over under are two of the easiest bets to understand and they are usually a 50-50 chance to win some cash. More experienced players can look at spreads and parlays, plus proposition bets can be a lot of fun. If you want to know more about any type of wager, check out the betting guides we have at Bet Station.
New York Online Gambling Tax Rates
Every state has a different tax rate when talking about online gambling. When filing your taxes you must declare your winnings as other income. The rate at which New York taxes is dependent on how much you earn in the year. The taxable rate in New York ranges from 4% for the lowest earners to 10.9%. This may sound intimidating, but the top tax band only applies to anyone earning $25 million a year.
Like most states, there has been a recent discussion to adjust the state tax level for New York. This number is subject to change, but we will ensure the information at Bet Station is as correct and up-to-date as possible.
New York Sports Betting Revenue
Sports betting in New York is worth an absolute fortune. That is because NY is one of the most popular states in America for sports betting. Looking at January 2022, New York spent just under $1.7bn in one month on mobile sports bets. Since then, players have wagered $14.5bn in 11 months. The table offers a closer inspection of the more recent months New Yorkers spent on mobile sportsbooks.
September 2022 | October 2022 | November 2022 | Total | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mobile Sports Betting Handle | $1.256bn | $1.543bn | $1.553bn | $4.354bn |
Mobile Gross Gaming Revenue | $143.3M | $145.6M | $148.2M | $437.2M |
As you can see, the amount bettors will spend is significantly higher than an average state. If you look at Pennsylvania, players spent just under $600 million in September using online sportsbooks. That is around half of what patrons spent in New York, just one state over. With this much money being thrown around, you can see why legislation is coming at a significantly slower pace than in other states. However, given how much sports betting is now worth to NY, you can expect to see more relaxed rules in the future.
Payment Methods at NY Sportsbooks
Another way in which sports betting sites can differ is in the payment methods they offer. Some sportsbooks have a wide selection of methods to choose from, whereas others are far more restricted. Sports betting sites can support online banking, credit cards, gift cards, and even external systems such as PayNearMe. Use the tables below to check whether the sportsbooks in New York support your preferred payment method. We only recommend joining a service where it is quick and easy to get your money in and winnings out.
Deposits
No two sportsbooks in New York will offer the same range of payment methods. That is because there are over a dozen ways for players to deposit their funds into sports betting accounts. Fortunately, given the popularity of sports betting in New York, most sportsbooks have a wide selection to choose from.

Withdrawals
Most sports betting sites make withdrawing your winnings a straightforward process. Each sportsbook has a different range of methods to consider, most of which are completely free. One of the quickest and most widely accepted ways to withdraw your funds is through PayPal. However, what if you didn’t have an account? What other ways can you get a hold of your cash? Below is a table showing each sports betting site and all the withdrawal methods they support.
Payment Method | FanDuel | BetMGM | Caesars | DraftKings | Bally Bet | BetRivers | PointsBet | WynnBET |

It is not uncommon for sports betting sites to have additional layers of security for withdrawals. If you wanted to withdraw via PayPal after depositing from your credit card, some sportsbooks won’t give you the option. This is because they will only allow PayPal withdrawals once you have deposited using this payment method. It may sound annoying, but it could protect your funds if the worst was to happen.
Promotions and Bonuses at New York Betting Websites
When making sports bets, promotions can help make your week far more exciting. Having the ability to claim free bets, make use of risk-free bets, or boost your odds for more profit is only ever useful in our eyes. If promotions sound like something that will be important to you, then you will find the next few sections extremely helpful. We have details about the most commonly used promotions and which sportsbooks are the best for each bonus.
Promo | Explanation | Example |
---|---|---|
Risk-Free Bet | An opportunity to place a bet where you can get your money back as if your bet fails. | Bet $25 on a same game NFL parlay and get your stake back as a free bet if your wager loses. |
Free Bet | The chance to place a bet without using your own money. | Place a $1 free bet on a parlay with +6000 to win $60. You do not win the stake when using a free bet. |
Odds Boost | The sportsbook allows you to boost the odds of a bet that you have created. | Choose three or more legs for a NHL parlay to receive an odds boost. The more legs you choose, the bigger the boost. |
Deposit Match | The amount you deposit is matched by the sportsbook either as free bets or bonus cash. | Make a deposit over $10 to have it 100% matched up to $250. |
Risk-Free Bets
No matter how much experience you have making sports bets, the first promotion you will see at most sportsbooks is the risk-free bet. That is because it is the most common welcome offer for sports betting sites in New York. We have listed below the sportsbooks with the best risk-free welcome bonus to help you narrow down your search. Remember, New York sports betting sites can also offer risk-free bets during a normal week of betting.
Best Risk-Free Bet Sites
- FanDuel: Get up to $2,500 back in free bets if you do not win your first bet. Place a three-leg same game parlay on Thursday night football and get a free bet refund if your wager loses.
- Caesars: Your first bet at Caesars is risk-free up to $1,250 plus you receive 1,000 reward credits and 1,000 tier points.

Odds Boosts
There are two types of odds boosts you will see when browsing New York sportsbooks. One is where the sports betting site will boost the odds to one specific bet for an upcoming game. The other applies to a unique type of promo that allows you to boost your bet. You could make a parlay and increase your payout depending on how many legs you choose. Below are the best sites for odds boosts in NY plus some examples of typical boosts at each sportsbook.
Best Odds Boost Sites
- BetRivers: Make a four or more leg parlay on the NCAAB and receive a 20% profit boost. Place a same game parlay on the NHL Saturday games for a 20% profit boost.

Free Bets
We believe free bets are the best promotions for sports betting sites. That is because it is a completely free way to win some actual cash. A free bet is usually very lax on restrictions, meaning you can bet on anything you want. When you win, you usually win cash you can withdraw, if you have over the minimum deposit required.
Best Free Bets Sites
- BetRivers: Bet $25 on the NCAAF for a $10 live free bet. If you bet on NFL same game parlays, you could win a share of $500,000 worth of free bets. Make three NBA same game parlays for a $10 free bet.

How to Get Started on New York Sportsbooks
It can intimidate a new player to sign up for a sports betting site in New York. There are several steps to follow before you can make your first bet, and often. If you forget to enter a specific code, you could sign up and miss out on your welcome bonus. That is why we have put this section together, to help you sign up without missing out on anything.
Step 1
The first step is to choose which sportsbook you are going to join. There are currently only nine options for us to consider. This may sound like a lot, but when you compare it to Colorado, there are 24 sportsbooks available in the Centennial State. Choosing the correct sportsbook is not vital as you can always join a different one later on if you feel you picked the wrong site.
Step 2
Once you have selected a sportsbook to join, it is time to create an account. This is where you will need to enter your email address, choose a password, and even create a username in some circumstances. Once you have done this step, it’s time for your personal information. This will include your name, address, date of birth, and even your social security number. They use your social security number for verification. The only way around this step is to use another form of ID, which may take longer to verify your account.
As we mentioned above, some sportsbooks will ask you for a promo code at this point. You must enter a code here to receive your welcome bonus. Sportsbooks like Caesars will not give players a bonus if they forget to enter the code at this step. You can find the code if you visit the promotion page before you sign up.
Step 3
Once you have created and verified your account, the next stage is to make a deposit. If you used the deposit methods table we listed above, you would know if the sports betting site you joined supports your preferred method. This stage is also important for your welcome offer. If the sportsbook has a risk-free bet, then your first bet matters. If your bet wins, then you can enjoy the winnings. But if it loses, they will match your bet with a series of free bets. Make sure you read the terms and conditions to avoid losing your welcome bonus.
Step 4
The last step is also important for your bonus as it’s time to place a bet. Most sportsbooks have rules surrounding what qualifies for your risk-free bet. It must be over a certain amount and the odds can’t be too low. To ensure you get this right, we recommend reading the terms and conditions. The last thing to remember is to set limits on your account. Hopefully, you won’t need to worry about this, but ensuring you can’t deposit a certain amount into your account may help you avoid unnecessary losses.
Responsible Gambling New York
New York takes responsible gambling seriously. That is why you will find plenty of helplines and charities set up to help players take back control from the sportsbooks. If you have any trouble with sports betting, you can reach out via the 24-hour helpline at 1-877-8-HOPENY. Gambling is an enjoyable pastime. If that is not the case, then you should reach out to one of the many organizations operating in NY. Do not wager more than you can afford to lose. Reach out for support when you feel you have lost control.
